In both Fallout 4 and IRL, the Granary Burying Ground is a small cemetery near Boston Common and an official stop on the Freedom Trail.

Founded in 1660, Boston's third-oldest cemetery contains the graves of several historic figures including Paul RevereSamuel AdamsCrispus Attucks (first person killed in the Boston Massacre), Peter Faneuil (the guy who built Faneuil Hall), John Phillips (first mayor of Boston), Samuel Sewall (Salem witch trial judge), and John Hancock (the real guy, whose coat our ghoul mayor wears in Fallout 4).

The video game version (see screen capture below) is much smaller than the real location (see photo above). The actual Granary Burying Grounds contain over 2,300 grave markers and historians estimate as many as 5,000 people are buried there.

The cemetery also contains a memorial made of granite from the Quincy quarry (inspiration for the Quincy Quarries found in Fallout 4) and erected in 1827 to honor the parents and relatives of Benjamin Franklin, who was born in Boston but buried in Philadelphia.

There is a church beside the cemetery in Fallout 4 and its counterpart is Park Street Church, which is also an official stop on the real Freedom Trail.

I'll be writing more about each of these, and other Fallout 4 locations, and researching their real-world inspirations, in the months to come. Check back for updates or follow me on YouTubeTwitter and Patreon for more information.
