The Freedom Trail

The real Freedom Trail is a two-and-a-half-mile red line that connects sixteen historic sites in Boston, Massachusetts. It's the inspiration for Fallout 4's "Road to Freedom" quest as well as several locations within the video game.

Preserved and dedicated by the citizens of Boston in 1951, the Freedom Trail is a unique collection of museums, churches, meeting houses, burying grounds, parks, a ship, and historic markers that tell the story of the American Revolution and beyond.  Today the Freedom Trail is a world-renowned, signature tourist experience attracting over 4 million people annually to visit Boston's precious 17th-, 18th- , and 19th-century sites.” - FreedomTrail.org

As you can see, comparing the IRL and Fallout 4 maps side by side, they are very similar.

Just as in Fallout 4, sites IRL are noted with brass seals.

  4. Granary Burying Ground
  5. King's Chapel and King's Chapel Burying Ground
  6. Boston Latin School original site/Statue of Benjamin Franklin
  7. Old Corner Bookstore
  8. Old South Meeting House
  9. Old State House

This is a list of Freedom Trail sites I've identified in Fallout 4, with links to more detailed articles on this website. However, players who follow the red line in the video game will only find eight seals, highlighted in yellow

  1. Boston Common (Swan's Pond, Prost bar & gazebo)
  2. Massachusetts State House
  3. Park Street Church is represented by the church beside the Old Granary Burying Ground
  4. Old Granary Burying Ground
  5. King's Chapel and King's Chapel Burying Ground don't seem to exist in Fallout 4. Where they should be, in relation to other landmarks, there are only inaccessible skyscrapers and ruins.
  6. Boston Latin School original site/Statue of Benjamin Franklin also don't seem to exist in Fallout 4, though the ruined statue outside of Faneuil Hall and a slightly more intact version in Jamaica Plain do bear a resemblance to the Benjamin Franklin bronze on the IRL Freedom Trail.
  7. Old Corner Bookstore
  8. Old South Meeting House isn't in Fallout 4, as far as I can tell. I will update if found.
  9. Old State House aka Hancock's place in Goodneighbor
  10. Boston Massacre Site IRL is next to the Old State House. It's not noted in the game, other than being the same location as the "massacre" (as Hancock calls it) of mob boss Vic and his goons in Goodneighbor.
  11. Faneuil Hall
  12. Paul Revere House is an unmarked location near the Old North Church
  13. Old North Church (aka Railroad HQ) The game's Road to Freedom quest ends here but the real-life trail continues through the next three sites. Those sites, as well as bits of a red line, can be seen in Fallout 4, they're just not as part of the quest.
  14. Copp's Hill Burying Ground aka North End graveyard and the site of Shem Drowne's grave, who btw was a real person and actually did make a brass grasshopper!
  15. USS Constitution
  16. Bunker Hill Monument
